revengineers:

Anyone who went to our show on thursday got to see this in action but we thought it would be cool to make a video showing off the new Nintendo foot pedal I built. Pretty simple but extremely useful for cuing Nintendo sounds, sfx, and loops when I’m playing the guitar.

Also, fyi, I’ll totally build you one of these for $50, shipped! E-mail me at nickmaynard at gmail dot com.

The Nintendo program has kind of been put on the shelf for a bit but I made this thing in the meantime. I’ve got another controller project in the works right now that’ll take up my programming time.

adeclarationofsorts asked: hey nick,
have you tried or know anyone who has tried this? - http://www.unfungames.com/mariopaint/

it's a downloadable version of the composer feature from mario paint. i think it sounds cool but i didn't know if it's worth downloading.

Yeah!

I actually used it in the first nintendo jam I ever programmed. It’s pretty fun. I remember we would play Mario Paint at summer camp and replace all of the notes in the demo songs with the pig notes because it made the whole song sound like farts.

Quick little jam with a song I threw together in 10 minutes. Just messing around with LSDJ and NES Chords (Nick Maynard)

Enjoy!

preparation phase: completed!

so, after that last update i think my skeleton is complete. now all that’s left is to start adding in the code for the actual sections. i’ll probably make a few more demo programs in order to figure out some of the details of certain things but i’m pretty much ready to go!

TODAY’S NINTENDO GOAL:

this is a pretty quick goal but it’s important if i want my program to be visually appealing.

right now, i have all the data for my sprites in a table named “sprites”. likewise for my palette info. problem is, a table can only hold 256 different values. and like, per section of my game there are 32 values in the palette info. so, if i wanted each section to have a different palette, i would be limited to only a certain number of sections. some sections would have to use the same palettes, which isn’t a big deal at all but when i start working on graphics for this, i want there to be as few restrictions as possible.

so, each section should be able to have it’s own palette and set of sprites. that’s what i’m going to go add right now!

also, i might replace the font data with the font from an old video game. i feel weird just using no carrier’s .chr file still.

download “different screens two.nes” here.
but seriously, don’t actually download it. this is essentially an updated version of the last program i posted. the big differences - now instead of just loading different backgrounds, it also loads different palettes along with the nametables. also, there’s a little sprite you can move around.
so now, every section of the program has a unique nametable, a unique set of palette info, unique sprites, and it’s all organized really neatly!
i also went through the code and added a ton of comments to it.
